The Rain Over Leeds
Chapter Six — Eleven Eighteen
← Liam Barrantine / The Rain Over Leeds
Salters returned to Pennington's house.
The clock still showed eleven eighteen.
He stood looking at it.
Pennington stood opposite him.
"You've been here before," Pennington said.
"Yes."
"You think I killed Mercer."
"I think you know more about his death than you have told me."
Pennington's face hardened.
"You have no evidence."
"No."
"Then why are you here?"
Salters looked at the clock.
"Because of the time."
Pennington said nothing.
"Mercer was seen at Kirkgate Market shortly after eleven. Your clock stopped at eleven eighteen. That would be an interesting coincidence."
"It means nothing."
"Perhaps."
Salters walked slowly towards the window.
"Do you know what I find most interesting about people who construct alibis?"
Pennington stared at him.
"They construct them for the wrong moment."
There was a long silence.
Salters turned.
"You have been trying to convince me that you were somewhere else at eleven eighteen."
Pennington's face had become completely expressionless.
"But I haven't asked you where you were at eleven eighteen."
About Liam Barrantine
Liam Barrantine is 56 and lives in North Yorkshire with his family. He holds a degree in criminology and worked for many years as a forensic investigator, an experience which informs the procedural detail and the slow unravelling of evidence in his fiction. He has a particular interest in murder mysteries, the mechanics of a crime, the inconsistencies in witness accounts, the small things that do not fit. The Rain Over Leeds is his first novel.
