The Sunsets Over Rydal
The Sketchbook
← Diana Randel-Claire-Blake / The Sunsets Over Rydal
The rain in Rydal Water did not fall so much as it drifted, hanging in the cool autumn air like a veil over the hills. Maya stood near the edge of the water, wrapped in her oversized scarf, holding a leather-bound sketchbook against her chest. She had come to the Lake District escaping deadlines, bright screen light, and the nagging feeling that her life had turned into a series of checklists.
She was so busy trying to capture the mist over the water that she stepped directly onto a patch of wet moss. Her foot slipped, her balance failed, and her open sketchbook flew into a muddy puddle beside the path.
“Oh, no—”
Before she could reach down, a man in a cable-knit sweater dashed from the path, dropping his satchel and kneeling beside her.
“Hold on, don’t move,” he said, quickly unwinding his soft wool scarf and using it to scoop the book out of the mud, carefully dabbing the wet edges. “I think the drawings are still safe.”
Maya blinked, looking at his muddy hands, then at his scarf, and finally up at his face. His hair was messy from the damp wind, and his hazel eyes held a look of genuine concern.
“Your scarf,” she stammered. “You’ve ruined your scarf for my notebook.”
He looked down at the fabric, then gave a warm, easy smile that made the chilly morning feel instantly brighter.
“It’s just wool,” he said, holding out the salvaged book. “I’m Julian. And I’d say a good drawing is worth a muddy scarf any day.”
About Diana Randel-Claire-Blake
Diana Randel-Claire-Blake is a lifelong believer in love, laughter, flowers, and the little miracles that make every day worth getting out of bed for. At 75, Diana still believes that it is never too late to find happiness, wear far too much purple, drink tea from an excessively sentimental mug, and fall hopelessly in love with life all over again. Inspired by the beauty of ordinary moments, she writes stories about second chances, everlasting love, lakeside walks, cups of coffee, and the mysterious magic that happens when two hearts simply refuse to give up on each other.
