Mugs of Cocoa and Wooden Notes

The Sunsets Over Rydal

Mugs of Cocoa and Wooden Notes

← Diana Randel-Claire-Blake / The Sunsets Over Rydal

Julian was a local craftsman who spent his days restoring old timber boathouses around the lake. After their chaotic meeting on the path, he insisted on walking Maya to the nearby tearoom to buy her a hot drink, and to make sure she hadn’t twisted her ankle.

They sat near the stone fireplace, cradling giant porcelain mugs of hot chocolate with whipped cream.

“So you came here to escape?” Julian asked, setting his mug down.

“I came here to remember what I actually like doing,” Maya admitted, looking down at her hands. “In the city, everything moves so fast. I felt like I was running a race I never signed up for.”

Julian nodded slowly. “The lake has a way of slowing time down. It forces you to look at things properly.”

“Like muddy paths?”

Julian laughed, a rich, genuine sound that echoed softly against the wood-paneled walls. “Especially muddy paths.”

The next morning, when Maya opened the front door of her rented stone cottage, she found a tiny, hand-carved wooden feather sitting on the doorstep. Wrapped around it was a small strip of paper written in neat handwriting:

> To replace the page the mud took. — J.

Maya held the little carving against her heart and found herself smiling for the rest of the day.

About Diana Randel-Claire-Blake

Diana Randel-Claire-Blake is a lifelong believer in love, laughter, flowers, and the little miracles that make every day worth getting out of bed for. At 75, Diana still believes that it is never too late to find happiness, wear far too much purple, drink tea from an excessively sentimental mug, and fall hopelessly in love with life all over again. Inspired by the beauty of ordinary moments, she writes stories about second chances, everlasting love, lakeside walks, cups of coffee, and the mysterious magic that happens when two hearts simply refuse to give up on each other.
