Chapter 3 — The Feast of False Faces

← Jill Freeman / The Crown of Ashes

Denise decides to stage a publicity event to restore confidence in the businesses. She announces a relaunch of the gymnastics club, a special promotion at the beauty booth and a fresh start for the cosmetic operation under new management.

The event is intended to demonstrate that the industrial estate is a thriving community of affordable services. Instead, it becomes a grotesque spectacle.

Customers arrive demanding refunds. Former surgery patients confront representatives of the clinic. Parents complain about the condition of the gymnastics equipment. The dating website operators attempt to recruit new members while simultaneously arguing over their own mounting debts.

The beauty booth becomes the centre of the chaos. Cheap fake tan stains towels, clothes and the reception furniture. Denise, determined to appear composed, moves from one confrontation to another while pretending that everything is under control.

Mara arrives intending to leave Denise for good. She has decided that she will no longer accept a relationship that exists only in private. She tells Denise that she will not protect her from the consequences of her own decisions.

In a moment of panic, Denise publicly denies that their relationship was ever serious. She describes Mara as an employee who has become emotionally attached to her.

The denial devastates Mara. For the first time, she realises that Denise is willing to sacrifice her rather than risk public humiliation.

The dating website operators have recorded enough conversations and gathered enough documents to understand the scale of the deception. They begin threatening to release material unless Denise pays them. Their greed, however, makes them careless. They circulate private information that implicates themselves as well as Denise.

The resulting scandal spreads rapidly online. The publicity event becomes a public spectacle of accusations, denials and recriminations.

Then comes the most damaging revelation: Denise's financial troubles began long before the cosmetic-surgery complaints. She has been concealing debts, moving money between businesses and making promises she could not fulfil. Her empire was never the success she claimed.

Mara, who once believed that Denise was capable of changing, finally sees that Denise's public lies and private betrayals are part of the same pattern.

Yet Mara makes a fateful decision. Rather than simply walking away, she resolves to expose everything, believing that the truth will restore her dignity and force Denise to face what she has done.

She does not realise how many other lives the revelation will destroy, including her own.
