The Sunsets Over Rydal
The Bench by the Water
← Diana Randel-Claire-Blake / The Sunsets Over Rydal
To mark their fifty-year anniversary, Julian took Maya down to the quietest stretch of the shore. There, nestled beneath a towering pine tree, stood a sturdy oak bench he had spent weeks building in secret.
Inscribed on the top wooden slat were the words:
> For Maya, who fell into my life and stayed forever.
Maya pressed her hand against the carved letters, tears welling in her eyes. “Julian... it’s breathtaking.”
“I wanted to build somewhere we could always rest,” Julian said, helping her sit down. “A place where the world stops, just for us.”
They sat together as the sun began to dip behind the fells, painting the sky in vibrant shades of rose, gold, and deep plum. The chilly evening air settled around them, but wrapped in each other’s arms, neither felt the cold.
“Do you remember the wooden feather you left on my doorstep?” Maya asked softly.
Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, worn piece of smooth wood, the very same carving from all those years ago.
“I never let it go,” he said, placing it gently into her palm. “Just like I never let you go.”
About Diana Randel-Claire-Blake
Diana Randel-Claire-Blake is a lifelong believer in love, laughter, flowers, and the little miracles that make every day worth getting out of bed for. At 75, Diana still believes that it is never too late to find happiness, wear far too much purple, drink tea from an excessively sentimental mug, and fall hopelessly in love with life all over again. Inspired by the beauty of ordinary moments, she writes stories about second chances, everlasting love, lakeside walks, cups of coffee, and the mysterious magic that happens when two hearts simply refuse to give up on each other.
