LX — Resonant Wealth – Dependability and Purpose

← Karl Swainston / Resonance

You have to be able to depend upon yourself as a person of integrity and determination. You have to start with you and depend on you first. If it is a promotion you are after at work, you have to make sure you arrive on time, before time is even better, and go out of your way to be dependable and an asset to others, for rewards will flow in your direction, as you are giving out you are not only a dependable and spirited person, but you also have industry and imagination – two fine qualities – with which you can help colleagues and the business you aim to be promoted in. Be careful, though, not to show undivided attention only to your line manager, or the boss, as this course of action can be frowned upon and will certainly be to the distaste of others including the boss. Spread your dedication and dependability across all avenues, streets, and roads, every nook and cranny of the business. By this action, you will gain be esteemed by nearly all work colleagues and you will show yourself not only help and support to others but a true and dependable spirit the organisation can rely upon.

It is of absolute importance that you have a determined goal, which is written down in very specific detail, and, accompanying that desired goal, there is a clear plan of action, which, in turn, sets out what you are going to do in order for that plan to be brought to fruition. However, more often than not, there is an aimless wandering or a flimsy belief in what you can achieve. A man casually throwing out the remark, 'I want to win £4m on the lottery,' and then no more effort is ascribed to his desire is a futile aspiration. Nature gives with extreme rarity those who are not willing to work to achieve it. A definite and achievable plan must have credence right at the very start and with that belief a determined effort written down in a clear plan of action. The plan can change, and often it is necessary for the plan to change, but aim and focus of your plan should not; it should remain as steadfast as a mountain anchored to its earth. Driven deep within this plan should be the ambition to reach your goal. The more ambitious person will only set themselves achievable targets that they know they can get. They won't waste time on idle ambitions and whims and seconds of fancy. No. The ambitious person is definite about what they want and is definite about how they are going to get it. The ambitious person will not set goals for themselves that are too easily achievable and don't constitute significant progress towards their desire. Their desire determines actions with outcomes that are achievable, but not given, and they always have to work hard at to achieve. What is more, having a definite purpose for your actions, a definite goal if you like, will make the journey and adventure to it lucid, as you will know exactly where you want to go and want to be in the future, and you will recognise all the signs, which fate and fortune will guide your path to this desire.

About Karl Swainston

Karl Swainston is a writer and storyteller whose work is forged from a life lived across the North of England and far beyond. Growing up on a Leeds council estate in the 1960s, Karl's journey was anything but linear. By the age of thirty, he had already lived a dozen lives: from the rigors of grammar school to a degree in Latin, a stint as a fishmonger, a period of discovery living in Marseille, and a return to the hustle of London. Whether working as a postman, a builder, or competing as a county-level chess player, he was, above all, an avid reader—constantly documenting the world around him. This restless spirit continued into his professional life. Karl later taught in Bradford, where he ran a specialist unit for 244 of the most excluded students from across the region—young people whom even the local Pupil Referral Units could not accommodate. Working alongside his old friend Malcolm, Karl spent his days navigating the volatility of Bradford's most aggressive and dysfunctional teenagers. Throughout his life, Karl has been an avid runner and has always shared his home with a rotating cast of beloved dogs and cats—companions who have been constant witnesses to his work. As a writer, Karl's range is as expansive as his history. He works across a wide breadth of genres, including fiction and short stories, autobiography and memoir, biography, non-fiction, and metaphysical writing, as well as providing sharp commentary, opinion, analysis, and essays. Whether writing about his years managing the Harrogate Arms or offering insights from his current adopted home in South East India, where he lives in a simple village with his dog, Bambi, Karl's voice reflects the full, untidy, and deeply human breadth of life. He continues to draw on the rich, decades-long tapestry of his experiences to tell stories that matter, proving that no matter where you live, the human story remains the same.
